Rabbit R1 was actually just an Android application
Rabbit's R1 AI device, which debuted last week, has sparked several inquiries, the first of which is, "Why isn't this just an app?" Friends, that's because it is only an app, that's why.
Mishaal Rahman over at Android Authority was able to get Rabbit's launcher APK onto a Google Pixel 6A. He was able to operate the program as though it were on Rabbit's own device with a little modification. He was able to create an account and begin asking it questions using the volume-up key instead of the R1's single hardware button, just like he would have with the $199 R1.
Rahman notes that it's likely not the case that the app has every feature that the R1 has. "Some of the functions would likely fail if we tried," he stated, "because the Rabbit R1's launcher app is intended to be preinstalled in the firmware and be granted several privileged, system-level permissions — only some of which we were able to grant." However, the program appears to have more in common with a standard Android app than not, given that it runs on a midrange phone from nearly two years ago.
Jesse Lyu, the CEO and founder of Rabbit, objects to this description. He made a long statement to The Verge, which we have included in part here. If you would like to read it in its entirety, it was also uploaded to Rabbit's X account.
Since rabbit r1 is not an Android app since rabbit OS and LAM operate in the cloud using highly customized AOSP and lower level firmware changes, our service cannot be accessed by a local bootleg APK that does not have the necessary OS and Cloud endpoints. Since rabbit OS is tailored for R1, we are unable to service clients from other companies.
Not only does the R1 appear to be running on an open-source version of Android, but Humane's AI pin does as well. However, the R1 is currently under fire since the initial evaluations are starting to surface, and they're not good, Bob. Earlier today, Rabbit released its first software update to fix a few issues, such as a rapidly depleting battery. After installing the update this morning, my R1's idle battery performance has much improved, suggesting that the issue is now more effectively under control.
The R1's inability to accomplish enough beneficial tasks to make its existence necessary in the context of phones, however, is the greater issue. It appears that this AI device might have been an app after all.
